The Eldred World War II Museum
At the start of World War II, it was unclear as to where Brazil stood politically. Trading with both Axis
and Allied nations in the early stages of the 1940s, Brazil eventually recognized the economic benefits
of joining the Allies.
Brazil declared war on Germany and Italy in 1942 after several Brazilian vessels had been sunk by
German U-Boats. Brazil sent the Brazilian Expeditionary Force, about 25,000 men, to Europe to fight
for the Allies in Italy in 1944 until the war ended in Europe. Brazil was the only South American
country to send troops overseas.
The Brazilian 1st Fighter Group also operated in Italy, flying American-made P-47's.
