| Three of the five remaining original Navajo Code Talkers from WWII visited the Eldred museum in June. The Marine Corps first selected 29 men for the special assignment of developing a secret code. The original code talkers did not know they had a special mission until after boot camp. The Navajos issued communications using their native language during the island battles in the Pacific. |

| Everything was from memory with nothing written down. The Japanese were never able to break the code, which was used successfully throughout the war. By the end of the war, 400 had been taught the secret code. The code talkers were told not to reveal their secret work for 24 years in case they were needed again. It was a hidden secret of WWII. After 29 years of silence, the code talkers were honored by the Marines and were given a Congressional Medal. They have recently been featured on 60 Minutes and a movie has been made about them. The museum plans to have a collection of Navaho Code Talker stories. |
