World War II began for Estonia not with Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union, but rather with the
Soviet Union's occupation of Estonia.  In the summer of 1940, the Soviet Union absorbed Estonia
into the Soviet Union with a display of overwhelming force.  Estonia became part of the Soviet
Union without a fight.  Almost immediately, the Soviet Union began deporting Estonians to
Siberia, where thousands would die.

As a result of Soviet brutality and suppression, German forces were welcomed as liberators when
Nazi forces swept through Western Russia in June and July of 1941. Many Estonians volunteered
to fight for Germany and by war's end, over 50,000 Estonians had served with the Germany and
Finland's armed forces.

The Soviet Union would again occupy Estonia in the fall of 1944, ushering in a new era of Soviet
domination that would last until the fall of the Soviet Union in 1989.

Estonia was a nation caught in the middle of the conflict between Germany and the Soviet Union,
getting neither respect or sympathy from either side.  Countless Estonians fell victim to battle
and large numbers of Estonian Jews were killed in both German and Soviet concentration camps.
