During the last 1930s, Great Britain had followed a policy of appeasement regarding Nazi Germany's
expansion on the European continent.  However, Great Britain warned Germany that if the
expansion continued into Poland, England would declare war on Germany.  The threat did little to
persuade Hitler not to invade Poland and on September 1, 1939 German forces entered Polish
territory.

On September 3, 1939, Great Britain and France declared war on Germany, officially beginning the
Second World War.  Great Britain had sent an expeditionary force to France to prepare for battle
with Germany.  When Germany invaded France in May 1940, the British Expeditionary Force was
pushed off the continent.  Germany began its' aerial assault on Britain in August 1940 in
preparation for a land invasion. However, the Royal Air Force fought valiantly and repelled the
German attacks, preventing the invasion of England.

Great Britain would be buoyed by the successful defense of the country and would score a major
defeat of German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's Afrika Korps in North Africa under the leadership of
British Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery in 1942.

British forces would fight in Europe, the Pacific, Africa and the Mediterranean, contributing
greatly to the defeat of the Axis Powers.
