Portugal declared its' neutrality in September 1939, long before it was clear a new world war was about to
begin. Prior to Portugal's declaration of neutrality, the country held Allied sympathies (Great Britain and
France).
Despite German armies at the doorstep of Portugal and Spain in the fall of 1940, Portugal maintained its'
neutrality. The Allies assured Portugal that if Axis forces attacked the country, the Allies would intervene.
However, an invasion of Portugal never came and the country was able to maintain its neutrality
throughout the war.
Portugal became a safe haven for Jews during World War II. Portuguese policy allowed Jews to easily enter
the country. Portugal became the starting point on many European Jews venture to the United States.
